Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Conclude Divorce Agreement After Over 8 Years of Bitter Legal Battles (Exclusive)

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finalized their divorce settlement eight years after the Maria star sought to terminate their two-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.

Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, completed their divorce proceedings on Monday, Dec. 30, as reported by Jolie's attorneys.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina initiated divorce proceedings against Mr. Pitt. She and their children left the shared properties and since then, she has been focused on achieving peace and healing for their family,” said Jolie's lawyer, James Simon, in a statement to PEOPLE. "This is merely one step in an extended process that began eight years ago. Honestly, Angelina is exhausted but feels relieved this part is concluded.”

A source close to Jolie adds, “She avoids speaking negatively about [Pitt] both publicly and privately. She has been striving to remain positive after a challenging period.”

A representative for Pitt declined to confirm or comment.

Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 19, 2016, shortly after a private plane incident where she accused Pitt of being abusive to her and their six children. Pitt was not charged by authorities following investigations, and Jolie chose not to file charges.

Four months later, the former couple issued a joint statement stating they had agreed to manage their divorce privately and maintain confidentiality using a private judge.

“The parties and their attorneys have signed agreements to protect the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal determinations and facilitate the resolution of any remaining issues,” according to the statement.

The statement concluded, “The parents are dedicated to presenting a united front in the recovery and reunification process.”

Prior to the 2017 privacy agreement, Pitt and Jolie were entangled in "strained" divorce negotiations focused on custody issues and trading severe accusations in court filings in Los Angeles Superior Court.

In January 2017, they reached an agreement to safeguard confidential records about their six children, most of whom are now adults: Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Vivienne and Knox, both 16.

The former couple, whose divorce was bifurcated, were officially declared single in 2019. (Pitt has been in a relationship with L.A. jewelry executive Ines de Ramon, 34, since 2022.)

In the subsequent years, they engaged in legal battles over custody and issues concerning the $164 million French estate and winery they jointly owned, Château Miraval.

In February 2022, Pitt filed a lawsuit against Jolie over the sale of her stake in Château Miraval, to which the Tomb Raider star responded with a countersuit, accusing him of "waging a vindictive war against" her.

The countersuit, filed by Nouvel, a company founded by Jolie, alleged that Pitt "orchestrated a successful plan to take control" of Château Miraval after their separation in 2016.

A source close to Pitt told PEOPLE regarding the countersuit, "This is just the latest attempt to mislead, recycle, and distort the truth of what has occurred over the past six years, expecting that rational individuals would be deceived by these blatant falsehoods."

In her case management statement, Jolie labeled Pitt's lawsuit as "frivolous, malicious and part of a problematic pattern." She maintained that there was no "secret, unwritten, or unspoken agreement" requiring them to seek approval before selling their shares of Château Miraval.

In November, Jolie achieved a legal victory when a judge mandated that Pitt must provide documents, including emails and texts. Jolie’s attorney, Paul Murphy, asserts these records will substantiate her claims of abuse by Pitt and alleged "years of cover-up."

In the same month, Pitt secured his own win in the winery dispute. Jolie's attempts to dismiss the lawsuit were denied, advancing the case towards trial. This development could potentially prove the existence of a written agreement between the former couple regarding the sale, which a source close to Pitt claims "validates the legitimacy of his claims."

Pitt’s attorneys have criticized Jolie’s demand for these documents, describing it as "a sensationalist fishing expedition.
